How warnings work
When drivers using Crossbuck are stopped at a railroad crossing long enough to suspect a train, the crossing shows as "May be blocked", or "Appears blocked" once more drivers are waiting. As you drive toward it, Crossbuck says so aloud, shows a notification if another app is on screen, and suggests the nearest bridge or underpass across the same railroad. When each crossing is usually blocked comes from reports to the Federal Railroad Administration. Crossbuck covers crossings in the United States.
Not getting warnings?
- Allow location "While using the app" and allow notifications for Crossbuck in your phone's settings.
- Before you drive, open Crossbuck and tap Start watching. It then keeps watching while you use your maps app or lock the phone. On Android you can also long-press the Crossbuck icon and pick Start watching.
- On Android, a "Crossbuck is watching for crossings" notice shows while it's watching; its Stop button ends it. Swiping Crossbuck away also stops it, and so do 10 minutes without moving (except while you're waiting at a crossing). Tap Start watching again for your next drive.
- Spoken warnings can be turned on or off in Settings, under While you drive.
- A crossing only shows as blocked when drivers using Crossbuck are waiting there, so some blockages won't show. Always follow the signals at the crossing.
